University graduates in the country have been urged to  embrace competitiveness and impeccable values to achieve their goals.

The remarks were made yesterday during the 12th graduation ceremony of Kigali Independent University (ULK).

A total of 2,124 students under and post graduates, were passed out in different disciplines, including Development Studies, Accounting, Computer Science, Law, Finance and International Relations.

Up to 1,748 graduated with bachelors’ degrees, 58.5 per cent of them female, while 336 completed their post-graduate studies, with 70.8 per cent male.

Speaking at the graduation, Dr Ezechiel Sekibibi, the University Vice Chancellor, congratulated the graduates upon their achievement and urged them to embrace competition in whatever they do to achieve their goals.

"Congratulations, but remember this is not the end but just the beginning. Go out there and prove that you are competitive, make us proud. Excellence  in your next endevours is what the country expects of you,” he said.

Prof. Rwigamba Balinda, the founder and president of the University, told the graduates to uphold strong values, be confident in their everyday life,  and involve God in their plans.

"Many people are competitive in this world. But they are distinguished by their values which can build confidence in them to achieve more than expected,” he said.

The graduates thanked the University and their families for equipping them with knowledge and skills that can guide them in their career to make their long dreams come true.

"It was hard for me but  thanks God and my family’s support. I managed to overcome this situation which was tough. It is an added experience that can help me survive in this competitive world,” said Judith Bwiza, who graduated with masters in finance.

Sandra Mukesha, a students’ representative, who also recently won the East African Community Inter-universities debate in Nairobi, Kenya, thanked the university for its support without which, she  said, they could not have succeeded.

"We are well equipped with skills that can help us challenge others outside in this competitive world. The skills and confidence gained here can help us in our future plans and lead us to success,” Mukesha said.
