Habiyambere, Ingabire win Nyanza Heritage tennis tourney

Rwanda’s tennis top seeds Dieudonne Habiyambere and Megane Ingabire clinched the men and women’s singles titles, respectively, of the first edition of the Nyanza Heritage tournament, which concluded on Saturday in Nyanza District.

The two-day tourney, which was organised as part of the annual ‘Inyanza Twataramye’ Cultural and Sports festival, attracted 16 top players in the country, eight in each gender as well as 16 male amateur players, who competed in the doubles category.

The men’s singles final was contested for by the two top-ranked players Habiyambere and Olivier Havugimana with the former winning three sets 3-6, 6-4, 6-3 to claim the title.

Habiyambere reached the final after defeating Damascene Munyaneza in the semi-finals (also in three sets 6-3, 1-6, 6-3) whereas Havugimana beat Yannick Muvunyi in straight sets 6-3, 6-4.

Likewise, the women singles title match pitted the country’s top two players Ingabire (1) and Gisele Umumararungu (2). Ingabire overwhelmed her rival and good friend Umumararungu 6-2,6-4 to win the title.

Meanwhile, the pair of Fidele Kamanzi and Jancy Karanguze beat Kassim Ntageruka and Hamadi Gatsinzi 6-3, 6-4 to clinch the amateurs’ doubles title.
