Police claim inaugural beach handball tourney

Champions Police handball club and Rubavu-based side Vision Jeunesse Nouvelle clinched the inaugural beach handball titles in the men and women categories, respectively, over the weekend in Rubavu.

Police retained the title to after downing Vision Jeunesse Nouvelle 2-0 in the men’s final, while the none-league outfit took the women’s crown after a 2-0 win over Stella on the final game.

Vision Jeunesse Nouvelle also took the juniors’ title defeating Stella 2-0 and cadet trophy 4-3 in shoot out after a-one all draw with Stella in the final of the boys’ category.

Stella claimed both the juniors and cadet (girls) titles, beating Vision Jeunnesse Nouvelle in both finals.

In the veterans’ category, the Coaches’ Team won the title after a 5-3 shout-out following a one-all draw against the Referees Team.

Meanwhile, the Rwanda Handball Federation plans to introduce beach handball league effective next year, according to the federation secretary general, Jean Paul Ngarambe.

"We have seen a number of talented players in this year’s tournament and have agreed to start a beach handball league next year to develop the sport in the country,” said Ngarambe.

The two-day tournament, sponsored by Sulfo Rwanda, attracted a total of 25 teams across the country competing in senior, junior, cadet and veteran categories, in both genders.
