Ingabire storms Uganda Tennis Open final

Rwanda women’s number one Megane Ingabire beat Kenya’s Zipporah Wanjiku in straight sets 6-0, 6-4 on Friday to progress to the final of the Uganda Open at Lugogo tennis courts in Kampala, Uganda.

Ingabire, who reached the final in 2013, will face another Kenyan Shuffa Changawa on Sunday. The pair last met in May this year during the Tanzania Open and Changawa won in three sets 7-5, 6-4, 6-4.

The 27-year-old Ingabire reached the semi-finals after overwhelming Uganda’s Hellen Musuza in straight sets 6-0, 6-1 earlier on Thursday.

Speaking to Saturday Sport by phone from Kampala, Ingabire noted that: "I am confident heading into the final and I believe will come home with the trophy.”

Meanwhile, Rwanda’s male players led by the country’s number one, Dieudonne Habiyambere were sent packing at the quarter-finals stage.

Habiyambere lost to Uganda’s Simon Ayella 6-4, 6-4, Damascene Munyaneza was beaten by David Oringa 6-1, 6-0, while Kenya’s Ibrahim Kibeti beat Olivier Nkunda 6-4, 6-4. Olivier Havugimana was beaten in the third round by Uganda’s Henry Mayanja 6-4, 6-1.
