Tigo Rwanda has launched cross-border mobile money transfer services with its counterpart Tigo DR Congo, making it possible for Tigo Cash subscribers to send and receive money between Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Tongai Maramba, the Tigo Rwanda chief executive officer, said.

"The initiative is great business for both the company and subscribers and will help reduce the cost of doing business between the two countries,” Maramba said.

The DRC is the leading export destination country for Rwanda, with exports to the country valued at over $100 million (Rwf75.5 billion). The launch of the mobile money transfer services between the two countries will, therefore, strengthen this trade.

Tigo launched the first cross-border mobile money transfer services between Rwanda and Tanzania last year. Airtel Rwanda and MTN Rwanda also have cross-border mobile money transfer services between EAC countries.

Uche Ofodile, the Tigo DRC chief executive officer, said the service will enhance the lives of the Congolese population and contribute to poverty reduction. How it works

To send money to Tigo Cash DRC, Tigo Cash subscribers in Rwanda will dial *200*6# and follow instructions.
