Upcoming cyclist, Yves Kabera Iryamukuru, 22, who died Sunday, is believed to have lost control before ramming into the side mirror of a bus then fell on the tarmac, sustaining injuries that led to his death.

The details of the accident were released by Police yesterday evening.

The Commissioner of Police George Rumanzi, the commissioner for Traffic and road Safety, provided a detailed account of the accident that took place along the Rubavu- Kigali highway around Shyorongi.

"The Cyclist was riding from Rubavu to Kigali in a team of other cyclists when he overtook a car around a sharp bend and after overtaking, he immediately lost control and hit a side mirror of a coaster RAC 226 Z which was coming from an opposite direction," CP Rumanzi said

He further said that the Iryamukuru's bicycle fell in the middle of the road as he lost balance and landed on the roadside sustaining injuries, he was immediately evacuated to CHUK where he later died.

"The cycling team was escorted by Traffic Police vehicles, with a lead car and another at the rear” Rumanzi explained.

According to Police, preliminary investigations indicate that the cause of the accident was wrong judgment while overtaking in the sharp bend. This caused him to veer on to the other side of the road hitting the ascending coaster while he was descending. The case file is being compiled and will soon be submitted to prosecution.
