Handball league champions Police on Sunday left the country for the African Handball Champions League slated for October 21-30 in Nador, Morocco, a day after winning the Carré d’As tournament.

The Carré d’As tournament featured the top four clubs in the league, including Police, APR, Ecole Secondaire Kigoma and College Inyeramihigo, who emerged first, second, third and fourth respectively.

Police defeated Inyeramihigo 51-33 in the semi-finals while APR defeated ES Kigoma 28-18 for both teams to qualify for the final played at UR-College of Education ground.

In the final, Sgt. Albert Sibomana’s Police beat APR 35-31 with Jean Paul Muhawenayo scoring a game high 15 goals to guide his side to victory—he also finished as the tournament top scorer with 21 goals. It was Police’s fourth Carré d’As title after 2011, 2012 and 2014.

"It was a tough game but we have managed to win it. It is a big motivation as we prepare for Champions League,” Coach Sgt. Sibomana told Times Sport.

The four-time league champions are making their second appearance following their debut in 2012 when they finished 8th.

Police is drawn in Pool A along with Al Ahly (Egypt), Stade Mandji (Gabon), Ittiad (Libya) and Widad (Morocco). Tunisia’s Club Africain, who are in Pool B, are the reigning champions.
