Parents have been urged to get involved in their children’s education in order to promote the reading culture in Rwanda. The call was made by Bethany Erikson, the Education Programme Director at Save the Children during celebrations to mark World Teachers Day and closing of the literacy month in Ngororero district recently.

"Parents need to get involved in early learning which promotes continuity of reading activities from school to home. It is nice to see many children and parents participating in reading on this day, every parent whether literate or not can play a big role in their children’s education,” Erikson said.

The event, which attracted educators, parents and children, was also attended by artistes Bruce Melody and Tom Close who used their music to emphasis the value of reading among the youth. Tom Close also premiered his literacy song to encourage young readers open more books.

The month-long literacy campaign which was organized by Save the Children and Umuhuza, a local non-government organization, was organized under the theme "Open the book, open the world”.
