Rwanda forward Lague Byiringiro is optimistic his teammates can put the country’s lengthy poor run of performance behind and make the fans happy again ahead of the 2026 World Cup qualifiers.

Byiringiro, 23, was the hero when he scored the lone but match winning goal against Mozambique in an AFCON qualifier on March 24, 2021, which was the last time Rwanda won a competitive game at senior national team level.

The versatile attacker had a wonderful season in Sweden, scoring 10 league goals for Sandviken IF who went on to win the Swedish third division league title, hence earning a promotion to the second division.

He is now looking forward to taking his club form to the national team as Rwanda looks to start their 2026 World Cup qualifiers campaign brightly when they face Zimbabwe at Huye Stadium on Wednesday, November 15.

Byiringiro is convinced that the country can get rid of their persisting poor performance but he urges his teammates to work for it if they are to put a smile back to Rwandans’ faces.

"We have experience so many days in disgrace, without a victory, in fact we are not making our fans happy," Byiringiro told the Press

"My target now, and the entire team, is to make Rwandans happy again so they come back to stadium the stadium with happy faces."

After Zimbabwe, Amavubi will take on South Africa at Huye Stadium on November 21.
