Second from bottom club University of Rwanda College of Education (UR-CE) are hoping to defy the odds as they seek a decent finish in the national handball league.

UR-CE, who have 18 points, play four of their last five games this weekend and according to their coach Joel Niyokwizerwa, the varsity side has many reasons to be at the wrong end of the table.

"We struggle to get equipment; sometimes the players don’t have shoes. The support is minimal” Niyokwizerwa said on Thursday.

Other league clubs facilitate the players better, which means UR-CE loses out on top talent from high school. This also results in players having little commitment to the team.

"Sometimes three or five players show up at a training session, it’s hard to get them together and coach them well. At times, we train just twice in a week,” noted Niyokwizerwa, before adding that it’s the passion for the game that drives the players.

These same woes are shared by their counterparts of University of Rwanda College of Arts and Social Sciences (UR-CASS), who lie at the bottom of the table with 17 points.

UR-CE take on second-placed APR (45 points) in their first game before facing leaders Police (48 points) on Saturday then on Sunday they face Nyakabanda (19 points) and fourth-place Gicumbi at Kimisagara youth sports centre grounds.
