The clutch: A growing trend in women's fashion

These days, women have bags big enough to fit a baby gorilla. In fact, some women insist that the bigger the bag the better. But big bags, glorious as they may be, do not blend with every occasion. Like weddings, for example, it will probably always be better to carry something smaller, not to pull focus – and that is where a clutch comes in.

A clutch is small and cute; something you hold with your hands. You would probably only be able to fit your phone (a regular one and not the tablets), ATM card, ID, and some lipstick inside.

Fanny Uwimana runs a beauty shop in town and says that clutches can work for both casual and formal occasions as they are quite versatile.

"It doesn’t matter if you are going for a night out or an office party; all you need to know is how to match them with your outfit. There are different ways to carry clutches; you can carry them under your arm or just hold them in your hand.

"They are trendy and can be worn with skinny jeans, leggings and of course dresses,” says Uwimana.

Jacky Mbabazi, a student at Rwanda Tourism University College in Kicukiro, says clutches are convenient and easy to carry.

"I prefer clutches since they are not bulky. When going out for parties I normally carry them because they make me feel light and flexible,” she says.

How to choose a good clutch

•Choose a colour that doesn’t ‘shout’ •The size of the clutch should match with the stuff you intend to carry to avoid overstuffing.•Choose colours that go with a wide range of outfits, and not just one.•Opt for a clutch with a strap, this will help you in places where can’t put it down. You can sling it on your shoulder.•Opt for a clutch with pockets inside that can hold all your possessions.
