There are plenty of options for natural hair styling, like keeping it short, wearing an afro, braiding or ‘locking’ it.

It is wise to consider which style is suitable for work. Wearing cornrows is one of the most interesting and appropriate ways to keep the hair looking fabulous. The style is simple and easy to maintain and is ideal for natural hair since it can stay neat for a month or so.

According to Mercy Umutoni, a hairdresser at Blessings Salon in Remera, plaiting simple cornrows is the best way to manage your hair should you wish to take a break from braids or weaves. She also says it’s a good idea to have cornrows when travelling to avoid the need to style it every time.

"A good number of women today are working class, some spend a lengthy period with wigs, weave or braids as their hairstyle because they don’t want to undo it and comb every morning. This is not healthy; cornrows are a better choice,” says Umutoni.

She adds that harsher hair tends to hold cornrows longer than light hair. Make sure that your hair and scalp are well relaxed, always apply natural oils before plaiting to avoid dryness of the skin, she says.

Straightening your hair before plaiting cornrows

•Wash your hair well and use deep conditioner to improve hair moisture as well as preventing frizzing.•Pull out and hold each section of hair for a few seconds to encourage it to straighten out before plaiting.•Plait your hair while it is wet if you want it to be curly, leave it to dry before plaiting if you do not need curls.•Apply liquid oil on plaits immediately after intertwining and cover it with a net or a hair cap.•Use ideal spray to add shine in the morning when you wake up.
