Looking good is a passion for most women, but when it comes to what you should wear to have appeal, at times many don’t know how to go about it.

When you look at the many ways people have tried to stand out from the crowd, it’s then that you realise that women will do anything when it comes to fashion.

Below, fashion designers highlight some of the key points that should be kept in mind when one is picking out an outfit.

Honore Sano, a designer at Isano Designs, says that women, especially those who are plus size, tend to buy clothes that are oversize because they are afraid to expose their body size.

"Normally, when choosing an outfit, try something that brings out your shape otherwise it will appear as if the outfit is the one ‘wearing you’ instead of the other way round. People should understand that going for something smaller makes you appear bigger if you are plus size and if you are the normal size, big clothes make you look very thin,” Honore says.

Pick outfits that complement your complexion

Olivier Niyitanga of Kicukiro based Tanga Designs LTD says that before one decides to go shopping, they should consider their skin tone.

"For dark skinned people, the best way to go is to choose colours that are bright; this will make your skin glow. The case should be different for those with light skin. The best way is to look for colours that are calm; they not only make you lively, they also add a touch of elegance,” he says.

Joy Uwimana who runs Little Joy Boutique at Kigali City Market says that when choosing an outfit, don’t go for one that has more than seven colours, instead, she advises to go for a smaller mixture of patterns.

"When you wear one piece of cloth with multiple colours, you may end up looking like a clown. The best way to go is to use moderate colours so that when it comes to accessorising it with either a clutch or earrings of any colour, it brings out the elegance in you, and that way you can make a statement,” Uwimana says.

Ysolde Ishimwe, a designer at Gikondo says, one should always watch out for the size of the pattern on the clothes before making a choice.

"Depending on someone’s body size, large patterns always go well with smaller sized people, while smaller patterns should be left for plus size women. This is because when you are big, wearing something that is big tends to magnify your body and you may end up appearing bigger than usual,” she says.
