Bafana Bafana’s Foster takes football break amid mental health issues

South Africa are traveling to Huye without Burnley forward Lyle foster prior to upcoming 2026 World Cup qualifiers against Benin and Rwanda after club announced he is taking a break from football on account of issues with his mental well-being.

Foster, 23, joined Burnley from Belgian side Westerlo in January and has three Premier League goals to his name from seven appearances so far this season.

He last featured for The Clarets during their 3-0 loss to Brentford on October 21, before the club confirmed on Thursday that he was in the care of specialists.

He unprecedented football break means he will miss Bafana Bafana’s home game against Benin on November 18 and the team’s trip to Huye to face Amavubi on November 21 at Huye Stadium.

"Recently, Lyle let us know that he continued to live with issues around his mental well-being and has to be reached out for help," an official statement from Burnley partly reads.

"He is currently in the care of specialists giving him the support and the care he needs to get back to full health,"the club further stated.

Foster’s absence comes a huge blow for Hugo Broos as it could affect the team's game plan during the November qualifiers.
