From any sensory test a consumer can easily tell a good coffee.  Although such a choice that is entirely based on quality while coffee beverage stands in the cup, the quality of coffee begins with the beans right from the farm and through the production chain. Whether coffee is consumed as an espresso, capucino or latte, to a consumer, good coffee is one with a sound smell, appealing color and mouth feels that gives the session of good manufacturing practices.

Along the production chain, the key players are many and luckily with the cup of excellence, coffee quality in Rwanda has been improved. Even from the recently concluded 7th Edition of the Cup of Excellence in Rulindo district both farmers and coffee processors accrue to hard work to maintain the competitive standards. From this kind of strict competition for exemplary coffee quality, local coffee producers have had an opportunity of providing unmatched coffee quality to match expectations of the international buyers something, which the experts attribute to the quality standards.

Promoting the quality of Coffee beans

Eric Ruganintwali, the Division Manager in charge of quality assurance and regulation Division at NAEB believes that the cup of excellence competition has steadily promoted the quality of coffees produced.

"We have been working towards a journey of fulfilling quality and it is promising that the quality of coffee in Rwanda is improving from the time to time since the introduction of the cup of excellence in 2008”

Every time the winning coffee lot is announced, winning farmers and owners of coffee washing stations benefit from more than Rwandan coffee producers living changed lives since the cup of excellencejust certificates of recognition and handshakes. This is because another opportunity is opened for them to sell their coffee lot to the biggest bidder on an online live international auction.

From this platform, biggest buyers of compete for these coffees in an event that peaks the cup of excellence competition and on September 16, this year, another live online auction for Rwandan coffee will be held hence experts are optimistic that a lot of revenue will be fetched.
