One person is missing after the car he was driving lost control and plunged into Lake Kivu yesterday.

The incident, involving vehicle registration number RAC 806D, took place in Bwishyura Sector in Karongi District on the shores of Kivu Lake, according to the Police.

Police spokesperson CS Celestin Twahirwa said the incident could have been a result of speeding.

"The vehicle had been hired but after reaching the destination the driver took it to the lake for cleaning. We have retrieved the vehicle, but the driver is still missing,” said Twahirwa.

By press time, investigations on the cause of the accident were still ongoing as the search for the body continued with both Police and military marines involved in the search. The victim was identified as Donath Ahorukomeye, 29.

Twahirwa cautioned drivers against breaching of traffic rules to avoid accidents.

Such an incident could have been prevented as the driver knew he was driving on lake shores and in a steep area, he said.

Eye witnesses said the vehicle lost control after the driver hit the edge of the road.

"He sped past us, only moments later to see the car hit the edge of the road before plunging into the lake,” said an witness only identified only as Mukabarisa.
