Hegman Ngomirakiza scored his first goal and the only goal for his new club Police as the cops defeated Sunrise 1-0 to win the 2015 Agaciro Development Fund Cup yesterday at Amahoro stadium.

The former APR midfielder Ngomirakiza netted the all-important goal on the 25th minute when he tapped home Rashid Kalisa’s free kick to hand Andre Casa Mbungo his second trophy in as many months as Police head coach—to add to the Peace Cup he won on July 4.

Sunrise, coached by former Rwanda international Jimmy Mulisa, started the first half positively but without creating any clear-cut scoring opportunities as Police’s central defensive pairing of Gabriel Mugano and Fabrice Twagizimana stood strong.

As the game progressed, Police, who started the game as favourites, started to assert their supremacy with both Ngomirakiza and Idisbard Nshuti going so close.

Muhammad Mushimiyimana and Kalisa dominated the midfield as the Rwamagana-based side continued to rely on counter attacks.

Nshuti found himself in a one-on-one situation but somehow failed to hit the target with only Sunrise FC’s Ugandan goalkeeper Robert Sakka to beat.

But on the 25th minute, Police took the lead when referee Louis Hakizimana gave a free kick after Sunrise defender Ali Serumugo handed the ball near the corner flag, which was taken by Kalisa and Ngomirakiza made no mistake from eights yards out.

Mulisa’s team poured men forward, winning several corner kicks and free kicks in decent areas but just couldn’t penetrate a well-marshaled Police defence.

Midway through the second period, Mbungo brought on Isaie Songa for Ngomirakiza to stabilise his team which was by now under sustained pressure.

Sunrise continued to control the game in the later stages but Sova Musa missed another good chance. Musa, Segawa and Bunani all had chances to equalise but failed to find the back of the net.

In the early kick off, Rayon Sports beat Musanze 2-0 to clinch the third position, thanks to a brace from striker Alexis Ngirimana.
