One person died on the spot and four others were seriously injured in an accident in Musanze District, Police confirmed.

The incident occurred on Friday night at around 7 PM in Gacaca Sector, Musanze District when the Taxi Hiace heading to Musanze from Burera district hit dead an 11-year old boy and veered off the road. Four passengers on board were seriously injured.

Inspector of Police Elvis Munyaneza, the Northern Province regional police spokesperson said the overnight Friday incident was due to speeding.

"The driver of the Taxi registration number RAA 235 T was over speeding and lost control after knocking the pedestrian and hit a tree,” he said.

The injured were transferred to Ruhengeri hospital where they are under intensive care, according to police.

"I saw it when the driver was driving here and there, I thought he had failed to control it due to over sleeping as he hit and killed the boy immediately,” Phanuel Ndacyayisenga, one of eye witnesses said.

Munyaneza said the area was a black spot and police say they are planning to deploy a police post on Musanze –Cyanika road to curb the current rampant accidents.
