We need real showbiz entrepreneurs

Those to blame are also those who would benefit the most were they to make their industry more professional, vibrant and financially viable: members of the industry and its promoters.

RE: "Who is to blame for our struggling entertainment industry?” (The New Times, July 24).

Those to blame are also those who would benefit the most were they to make their industry more professional, vibrant and financially viable: members of the industry and its promoters.

The buck starts and stops with them. We may have raw talent, but we seem to lack serious promoters. And without them to put all the ingredients together we shall remain backwaters in the global—and even regional—entertainment universe, taking a backseat to the DRC, Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda entertainment industry, whether in music, film or theatre.

There is a market. What are lacking are marketers. It is just like in the rest of our business world, with Rwanda consistently voted among the world’s top countries for its business-friendly environment and yet hardly a regional, let alone a world-beating, business name.

What we need are real entrepreneurs in all fields, not mere traders, unfortunately, these are what we have in too much abundance.
