APR FC were undone by careless mistakes as they were humiliated 4-0 by Sudanese debutants Al Khartoum in the quarter-final of the 2015 CECAFA Kagame Cup yesterday at the National Stadium in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania.

Coach Dusan Dule’s team, who came to Dar es Salaam seeking a fourth regional title, made a slow start and found themselves 3-0 down inside the first 37 minutes and never recovered from that blow.

APR, whose last group game was on Thursday last week, trailed as early as the 10th minute when Al Khartoum midfielder Khalid Atif tapped home from close range following mix-up in the APR defence.

Fifteen minutes later, Al Khartoum were 2-0 up, again courtesy of a defensive blunder, which Dominic Abui exploited with a lot of ease after APR goalkeeper Jean Claude Ndoli came off his line but failed to make good contact with the ball.

James Kwesi Appiah’s team continued to dominate play especially in the midfield as APR middlemen, Djihad Bizimana and Yannick Mukunzi looked well short of ideas and the strikers Michel Ndahinduka and Farouk Ruhinda lacked any meaningful service.

As APR surged forward looking to reduce the deficit, Al Khartoum captain Ibrahim Salim, made it 3-0 in the 37th minute, a goal that all but sealed APR’s exit earlier than many expected.

After the break, Dusan made tactical changes, bringing on Issa Bigirimana for Ruhinda, who did virtually nothing for 45 minutes.

That substitution didn’t change much as Al Khartoum maintained their stronghold on the flow of the game played under the scorching midday heat.

While Kwesi Appiah’s men seemed to take foot off the accelarating pedal in the second half, APR players couldn’t take advantage as they huffed, puffed and played with no imagination at all.

Dusan made further changes as he brought on Patrick Sibomana in the place of Fiston Nkizingabo, while Eric Nsabimana replaced the uncharataristically ineffective Mukunzi but with little success.

In the 80th minute substitute Osman Salaheldin completed Al Khartoum rout when he chipped over the advancing Ndoli to make it 4-0.

APR assistant coach Vincent Mashami said during the post-match press conference that, "We are hurt to lose the game but congratulations to Al Khartoum, for they were the better team and deserved to win.”

"We played so poorly today and we made so many mistakes for which we were made to pay, we would have liked to be in the final but it won’t be possible,” he added.

Al Khartoum will meet Gor Mahia in the semi-final on Friday, in what will be a repeat of group A clash between the two teams, which ended 1-1.
