A 27-year-old man has been arrested in connection with assaulting his father by stabbing him in the head.

The incident occurred last week in Mugote Cell, Ngoma Sector in Rulindo District. Residents intervened in the fight and alerted the Police

The suspect, Jean Damascene Uwayezu, was arrested at the scene, while his father was rushed to Remera Health Centre in critical condition.

Police Spokesperson for Northern Region, Chief Inspector of Police Andre Hakizimana, said such dangerous cases of assault were mainly caused by drunkenness and drug abuse.

He urged communities to intervene and try to solve family wrangles before they escalate into criminal acts.

"Some families have long-standing wrangles and sometimes resort to violence. You find people abusing drugs or alcohol and end up committing serious offences fuelled by these wrangles. It is advisable to report wrangles to local leaders so that they can mediate and solve them rather than trying to take the law in one’s hands,” he said.

Hakizimana appealed to the public to tackle domestic violence by promoting community policing and participating in sensitisation campaigns that denounce the trade of narcotics.
