Police FC have their eyes set on winning this year’s Peace Cup, according to head coach Andre Cassa Mbungo, whose team face league rivals SC Kiyovu this afternoon at FERWAFA ground.
The winner of this clash, the biggest game of the round of eight, will book a date against the winner between Gicumbi and defending champions, APR, who face-off at Mumena Stadium in Nyamirambo.
Mbungo, who won this competition with AS Kigali in 2013, defeating Muhanga FC 3-0 in the final, is determined to win today’s game, then focus on the rest of the campaign as Police seek to win a first trophy since the club was founded in 2005.
Police finished in third position in the league while their opponents were 9th.
"We are focused on winning the Peace Cup, it’s a knockout competition where anyone can beat anyone and our target will be to reach the final and win the trophy,” Mbungo told Sunday Sport.
He added, "We have good quality players and I think this team can win silverware this season. We are determined to win but we know it will be difficult given that all the big teams, apart from AS Kigali, are still in the race.”
Elsewhere, cup holders APR, have a tricky quarter-final clash against Emmanuel Ruremensha’s Gicumbi, one of only four teams to beat the military side in the league this season.
Rayon Sports face relegated side Etincelles FC at Kicukiro stadium, while another relegated side Isonga FC will be up against Espoir in Muhanga.
The semi-final first leg matches will be played on Wednesday, June 24 and the return leg a day later while the final will be played on July 4, which coincides with the national Liberation Day celebrations.
