The Nigerian government plans to build its embassy in the country as a way of bolstering their relationship.

The Nigerian High Commissioner to Uganda who is also accredited to Rwanda, Ambassador Fidelis M. Ayogu, announced the development on Saturday at Alpha Palace Hotel in Remera, where the Nigerian community in Rwanda was celebrating their country’s independence.

Nigeria got its independence on October 1 but due to logistical reasons, the Nigerian community here pushed the celebrations to October 4.

Ayogu explained that Nigeria has embarked on the process of requesting the government to allocate them land for their embassy.

"We have already put the money aside and the moment we acquire land, construction will commence immediately. We have the potential to meet the required world embassy standards,” he told the gathering. He added that the Nigerian community in the country needs to have a place it can go and express their concerns.

According to Engineer Ayubu A. Usman who steered the organizing committee for the independence celebrations, the Nigerian community in Rwanda is made up of approximately 300 people.

"We are here working as volunteers in different fields; we consist of doctors, engineers, teachers, technicians and nurses,” he said.
