And with over 300 historical sites, according to the Institute of National Museums of Rwanda (INMR), there are plenty of places to visit.

Out of these sites, only a few have been developed into museums.

Before 2007, there was only one museum in Rwanda- The National Museum of Rwanda, located in Huye District, in the Southern Province. Since then, the number has increased eightfold.

The New Times explored these different museums and met with various stakeholders to understand how Government of Rwanda’s investment in the different museums and heritage sites in the country has increased not only tourism dollars but also understanding of Rwanda’s past.
