Construction of a 6-kilometre road linking Rubirizi to Busanza, Kanombe in Kicukiro District, has been launched.

The road will also pass by Karumeyi Village Estate, an upcoming private housing project that will comprise of 300 units in Rubirizi.

Kicukiro mayor Paul Jules Ndamage revealed that the construction is expected to take nine months at a cost of total of Rwf4.2 billion.

It is also in line with the district’s 2014-2015 performance contract (imihigo).

"We expropriated some people where the road is supposed to pass; this road covers a length of six kilometres with a width of seven metres. We call upon those living near this road to safeguard all the public works and to plant grass on the edge of the road,” Ndamage said.

Sylverien Kabano, the project manager at Horizon Construction, the contractor, said it will be wider than most roads in the city.

Most roads in the country are six metres wide but the Rubirizi-Busanza road will be seven metres.

Paul Jules NDAMAGE the Mayor of Kicukiro district speaks to residents of Busanza.

"There are many institutions like Kanombe Military Barracks, Kigali International Airport, Kanombe, and Rwanda Military Hospital, Kanombe. This new road will link them to Rubirizi,” he added.

Yohana Chris Bihangamangwa, a resident of Rubirizi, hailed the move, saying it would help them commute easily to Kanombe.

He said the construction of the road connecting Rubirizi-Busanza started in 2011 but was shelved.

"We used to cross river Nyirakamana on our way to Busanza, and sometimes during the rainy season, the river would overflow making it difficult to cross the bridge.  It was also very risky to pass there at night, but we are happy that government is going to solve that problem,” Bihangamangwa said.

Alfred Karumeyi, the manager of Karumeyi Village Estate, expressed gratitude, saying the road network will support their project and help the people in the area.

Karumeyi Village Estate plans to develop 300 duplex houses (using pre-fabricated technology) and other construction projects on 19 hectares of land, said
