Rwandans should start focusing on the long-term gains  of environmental resources, for the benefit of the future generation.

This was the message from the Minister for Natural Resources, Dr Vincent Biruta, at a news conference on Thursday, ahead of the World Environment Day (WED) slated for June 5.

 The day, which is to be preceded by the Environment Week, which starts today,  and will be marked under the theme "Seven Billion Dreams. One planet. Consume With Care.”

According to Biruta, on WED, the government will officially launch the project to turn Mukura -Gishwati Forest in Ngororero and Rutsiro Districts into national parks.

"Reforestation is one of measures to cope with climate change effects. On the same day, the new park project will be launched,” he said.

The move, according to environment experts, has to be complemented by other measures for efficient use of resources to minimise threats to forests and the environment.

Director General of Rwanda Management Authority Dr Rose Mukankomeje said the Environment Week activities will include rallying the youth towards environment protection.

"We have been working with new curriculum designers on how to integrate environment education. We have also urged all districts to establish environment clubs in schools,” she said.
