Editor,

The ongoing conference in Kigali on the protection of civilians in conflicts is an important opportunity to discuss ways of rescuing civilian populations that are faced with atrocities in different parts of the world. It’s a well known fact that there are many armed conflicts in Africa and Asia.

Take the example of Burundi: civilians have been shot dead by the police while peacefully demonstrating against the third term of President Pierre Nkurunziza. My question is, who shall protect these Burundians?

Is international community, especially the United Nations, concerned by the problems of Burundi? Is the UN really aware of what is happening there?
