Police in Burera District are holding a man suspected of killing his wife. Yvette Nshimiyimana, 33, succumbed to injuries resulting from physical assault.

Jean Baptiste Ndagijimana, Cyanika Sector veterinarian was arrested on Wednesday, according to Police.

Chief Inspector of Police, Andre Hakizimana, the Northern Province Regional Police spokesperson, confirmed the incident, saying the suspect assaulted his wife on Sunday.

She was taken to Gitare health centre before being transferred to Ruhengeri Hospital, where she died on Wednesday.

The couple has been living together for over 10 years and had two children together. They were residents of Gasovu Cell, Cyanika Sector in Burera District.

"We are waiting for a postmortem report to identify the exact cause of death but we suspect she succumbed to injuries resulting from assault,” said Hakizimana.

Hakizimana said preliminary investigations show the couple had been experiencing domestic wrangles with constant fights.

This was corroborated by area residents who said the suspect has been very aggressive.

"The latest fight was a climax of long-running domestic wrangles. We intervened but found the wife already in critical condition.

‘‘She was rushed to hospital only to hear she had passed away,” said one resident.

Police urged residents to be vigilant and report to authorities conflicts before they escalate into serious wrangles.

The suspect faces assault charges resulting into death which attracts between 10 and 15 years or life in jail.
