Fire has gutted a school in Burera District leaving property, worth millions of francs, completely destroyed, Police have confirmed.

Chief Inspector of Police Andre Hakizimana, the Northern Province regional Police spokesperson, said the incident occurred on Sunday at around 7pm when a five-room dormitory at Ecole Secondaire Runaba in Butaro Sector caught fire.

"It occurred when the students were out in other school activities and no injury was registered, however all their property were gutted. We are still investigating to establish the cause of the fire,” Hakizimana said

Emmanuel Ngirwanabagabo, the head teacher, said the destroyed dormitory housed boys, adding that the incident occurred when the students were outside.

"We could have lost some lives. All the properties, including more than 130 mattress, 77 beds and other materials of students were destroyed,” said Ngirwanabagabo.

He said the affected students are now using classes as they are looking for other arrangements.

"Students are worried as their belongings were totally destroyed but we will see how to help them; meanwhile, lessons and school activities will go on uninterrupted,” he said.
