Two people were killed in separate scuffles that took place in local bars in Rwamagana District on Tuesday.

Ramadhan Riberakure, 22, a resident of Kigabiro Sector was murdered in cold blood after a fight with a friend over a woman.

According to eye witnesses, the deceased fought with another man who is on the run.

"It is sad that young men still quarrel and fight over women. The deceased was hit in the head with a hoe and he died instantly,” said Claude Karemera, an eye witness.

In another but related incident in Rubona sector, Fortunate Mukarugoye, 64, was strangled to death by two men after a quarrel in a bar.

Angry residents blamed the violence on use of illicit alcohol and drugs in communities.

"People drink illicit alcohol all day, fight or engage in other crimes,” another resident Richard Niyitanga said.

"So, unless the authorities take the necessary action, I am afraid we will continue to witness such horrible scenes of crimes.”

Inspector of Police Emmanuel Kayigi, the Eastern Region Police spokesman confirmed the deaths, adding that the culprits would face justice.

Police said that at least two people were arrested but a prime suspect remains at large.

Kayigi warned residents against drinking illicit alcohol, locally known as kanyanga, noting that it often results into violence.

"It is a shame that we still have people involved in such violence over small issues,’’ he said.

According to the law, suspects face life imprisonment upon conviction. We arrested two and are still hunting one who killed the 22-year old man,” he said.

Kayigi said that the police and the local government would soon crackdown on all bars known for violence in the district.

"We have learnt that there are some chaotic bars in communities…this can’t be tolerated. We shall work with local authorities to close them forthwith.”
