The Ministry of Sports and Culture will give Hermas Cliff Muvunyi Rwf1m after winning two gold medals at the 9th Grand Prix de Tunis six weeks ago.

The development was confirmed to Times Sport yesterday by National Paralympic Committee (NPC) president Celestin Nzeyimana.

The reigning World Champion in the Men's T-46 400m category won gold medals at the continental meet in Tunisia in 400m and 800m categories clocking 51:25 and 2:01:74 minutes respectively. He also finished fifth in 1500m race at the event.

"The Ministry has agreed to give Rwf1m to Muvunyi for his brilliant performance at the Grand Prix de Tunis in March. He is yet to be handed the cheque though," Nzeyimana said.

Nzeyimana also revealed to this newspaper that despite persistent financial struggles, in order to motivate athletes, NPC has also set up a Rwf 1m cash prize for whoever wins a medal at either the World Paralympics Championships or Paralympic Games.

By winning two gold medals, the 27-year-old Muvunyi qualified for this year's All Africa Games slated for September in Brazzaville and IPC Athletics World Championships scheduled for October 22-31 in Doha, Qatar.

In 2013, the elite runner won gold in T46-400m at the Lyon, France World Championships and was rewarded with a cash prize of Rwf1m by NPC and Rwf3m by the Sports Ministry.
