The national volleyball team yesterday defeated Kenya 3-2 to qualify for 2015 All Africa Games slated for September 4-19 in Congo Brazzaville.

Kenya, which was out to revenge after previously losing to Rwanda twice in the final of the same competition, started aggressively and won easily the first set 25-17 as Paul Bitok’s players failed to stop Kenyan attackers Chemos Michel Marua Denis’s thunder bolt spikes.

However, buoyed by a large crowd that included senior government and military officials, Rwanda won the next two sets 25-18 and 25-22, respectively, after strong spikes from Olivier Ntagengwa, Nelson Murangwa and Flavien Ndamukunda  while the trio of Fred Musoni, Vincent Dusabimana and  Lawrence Guma Yakan did well to stop Kenya’s spikes.

However, Kenya fought back to win the fourth set 27-25 sending the tie to extra time which the national side won easily 15-7.

"This is a very crucial win considering the nature of opponent we were up against, we managed to destroy their tactics which helped us to win, I am thankful to my players who did good job,” national team coach Paul Bitok said after the game. In the other game, Burundi thrashed Uganda 3-1 (25-23, 25-19, 25-23 and 25-18). Both teams had earlier lost to Kenya and Rwanda respectively.
