Editor,

Reference is made to Arthur Asiimwe’s article, "Welcome ‘home’ Gen Dallaire, take the good message back to Canada” (The New Times, April 29).

Lt. Gen. Romeo Dallaire is of course always welcome in Rwanda. It is even more gratifying for us to be able to receive him in a land that is 180 degrees the opposite of what he experienced in those extremely dark days of our nation’s history in 1994 – a country whose people are fully at peace with themselves and who have come to routinely take their personal security for granted.

Just a little correction over perceptions: beyond the small circle of journalism, few of us ordinary people believe that, except very rarely, the media profession ever concerns itself with such minor values as fairness, fact-checking, truth, impartiality, and credibility.

These are honoured more often in the breach and much less as defining characteristics.

Sensationalism and salaciousness are seen as much more profitable than boring facts of a normal country.
