The long awaited revamped curriculum is finally here after several months of hard work. Following its launch by the Ministry of Education and Rwanda Education Board (REB) last week, officials admit that the journey has not been a walk in the park.

The curriculum set to be implemented next year hopes to shift from a knowledge based approach of teaching to a competence based approach.

According to Dr Joyce Musabe, the head of curriculum development at REB, the new curriculum will address the demands of the global market meaning  Rwandans will be able to compete favourably.

In order to grasp concepts better, all subjects from kindergarten to primary three will be taught in Kinyarwanda as a core language of communication.

The new curriculum also seeks to make other subjects such as mathematics, entrepreneurship and sports more relevant through practical demonstrations. That is the way to go.
