Rwanda is globally recognized for her sustained efforts to protect the environment in order to ensure sustainable development, with major policies and strategies implemented by the Government through different institutions including Rwanda Environment Management Authority (REMA).

Rwanda’s efforts to protect the environment are mandated by the Rwandan constitution, in its article 49 which states that "Every citizen is entitled to a healthy and satisfying environment. Every person has the duty to protect, safeguard and promote the environment. The State shall protect the environment.

The law determines the modalities for protecting, safeguarding and promoting the environment.”
