Refer to the story, "Uwamahoro honoured for saving Tutsi child” (The New Times, April 20).

What a moving story and a heroic action by a truly humane woman! This woman is truly a mother that indeed needed to be honoured.

I thank those who organized this event and those who reported it. I was not aware that such humane actions ever existed.

I second the different commentators who called for a more tangible reward that would help her raise more children, including the other two, and help her spread the same values of humanity that led her to rescue a dying human being (an obvious risk to herself and her family at the time).

This value of "Ubuntu” (Ubumuntu) or humanity is one of the pillars under which our society should be built. May God bless this mother and her family!

Ms. Uwamahoro deserves more than just a symbolic gesture. A Hutu risking her life to save a Tutsi calls for greater recognition at the national level, perhaps recognising her by starting something like a foundation to support orphans of the Genocide against the Tutsi, including those whose fathers lost their lives fighting to stop the Genocide.
