The Liberal Party (PL) has indefinitely suspended its former president and former Rwandan envoy to Ethiopia Protais Mitali after the latter reportedly fled to Europe when his party demanded that he pays back funds he reportedly embezzled.

The decision was reached during a crisis meeting of top PL leadership chaired by the interim party president, Speaker Donatille Mukabalisa, on Monday.

They also agreed to drag Mitali to courts of law to compel him to pay back the funds he misappropriated, the party said in a statement.

Mitali reportedly fled to Europe last week after he was recalled by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The embattled former cabinet minister was recalled from his ambassadorial position in Ethiopia on March 21, and fled on April 2, 2015.

He was recalled following an official complaint of suspected embezzlement from his party.

The party claims Mitali diverted over Rwf60 million and had repeatedly reneged on his own pledge to return the missing funds.
