Sciences are a good option

I was influenced by my parents and teachers to do sciences at A’level because I passed them well at O’level. Unfortunately, I’m not passionate about Sciences but Arts and this is affecting my performance. One part of me tells me to drop Sciences for Arts since it is just one term into A’level. What do you think, I’m confused.

Dear Lydia,

Joyce Kirabo

You are blessed to be good at sciences which most students find hard. Studying sciences will broaden your understanding of the world around you, may allow you to influence and develop acceptable scientific knowledge and skills needed to approach matters in a reasoned and analytical manner.

Your teachers and parents have extremely explored the exciting benefits of studying sciences especially in the contemporary world.  The next step is for you to appreciate this and drive your positive attitude towards it because you have the ability to do sciences. A decision made in a positive frame of mind is more likely to be effective than one conceived in desperation. Your career must fortunately take a positive turn after a great deal of reflection considering the amazing benefits of doing sciences.

Science makes a positive impact on people’s lives and has many layers of depth of understanding. Remedies for many of the challenges that face our world today are developed by researchers who devote their whole lives to the pursuit of science. You have the capacity to become one of such people. So when you make a breakthrough, you will benefit lots of people.

Your scientific skills and expertise will enable you to add value in new start-up situations and will give you confidence in situations that need good scientific acumen.  This is because sciences will set out a unique platform and expose you to a wide range of future career opportunities including placement in the scientific industry where there is little job competition. Don’t dare drop sciences.

Running to do Arts does not necessarily guarantee you an easy ride. Besides, changing combination in the middle of the academic year is risky and could eventually affect your performance. Please ask your teachers for advice.

Diana Mutoni

You need to be sure about what exactly you want to do in future. If you had an idea, you would not be in this dilemma. Failing once does not mean you can’t pass sciences. Just be positive about sciences.

When it comes to academics, your interests and passion should be the basis for your decision. I think it is not too late to change the subject combination afterall it is what your heart wants.

Fiona Mukashema

Passion is very important in everything including academics. It is clear you do not like sciences so I wouldn’t advise you to hang in there. You should go for what you like because you are likely to perform better in that area (Arts).
