A truck driver has been arrested by Rwanda National Police (RNP) for attempting to bribe a traffic officer who had stopped him for carrying cargo without requisite documents.

Adrian Komeza, 52, was arrested in Kamonyi District last week as he attempted to offer Rwf25, 000 to an officer who had stopped him to verify if he was authorised to transport timber products.

"Instead of providing the documents as requested, Komeza tried to offer Rwf25 , 000 to the officer in order to let him continue with his journey,” Chief Superintendent of Police Hubert Gashagaza, Police Spokesperson for Southern Region, said.

"The officer alerted his colleagues and they immediately arrested the suspect.”

He commended the officer for denouncing the bribe offer and warned drivers and other members of the public who seek to bribe their way out of wrongdoing that they will be brought to book.

"A crime cannot solve a crime. It is better to follow the right procedures to acquire a service,” he said.

He also urged residents to cooperate with Police in crime prevention by providing timely information through community policing.

Police statistics indicate that between 2012 and 2014, over 80 drivers were arrested over bribery.

Bribery, on conviction attracts, between five and seven years imprisonment and a fine ranging from twice to ten times the value of the illegal benefit offered or promised.
