AS Kigali have surged to the summit of the National Football League, leapfrogging APR FC for the first time this term after a 2-0 win over relegation-threatened Musanze FC at Mumena Stadium yesterday.

Former APR starlets, Ernest Sugira and Hamdan Bariyanga netted for Eric Nshimiyimana’s side during either side of half time, which move them to 41 points, one above the Army side who play today against Mukura at Mumena stadium, kickoff at 3:30pm

Not regarded among the possible league title challengers at the start of the season, the City of Kigali-sponsored side, have gone on to become the surprise package and genuine contenders with five rounds of matches remaining. Musanze remain at 12th position with 18 points, one above the relegation zone.

It was AS Kigali’s 12th win of the season, the same number as APR, who however, have two games in hand including today’s which they now must win to regain their advantage at the top, a position they have held since match-day 1.

Pressure is now firmly on Vincent Mashami’s team to win against struggling Mukura, who are 11th in the table with 20 points but remain one of those team that like to give the Army side hard times whenever they meet.

Elsewhere, Police FC saw their slim hopes of moving into title contention dwindle further following a 2-1 loss away to Amagaju in Nyamagabe.

Congolese import Jean Pierre Muhindo scored a brace for Amagaju to take his tally for the season to 11 goals and at the top of the net busters list, one goal better than Kiyovu’s Baby Mbakiye and AS Kigali’s Sugira. Striker Jacques Tuyisenge scored Police’s consolation.
