Policy is a powerful instrument for directing development and a central tool addressing challenges faced by women farmers in agriculture. As the world comes together in celebration of the International Women’s Day, many women will celebrate their successes and the levels at which they have reached in various spheres of their livelihoods On this day, Actionaid International Rwanda brings forward the challenges faced by the rural woman farmer in Rwanda

Female population in Rwanda constitutes more than 53 % of the general population, which calls for more effort towards building their capacities especially the smallholder farmers. The government of Rwanda has been applauded for its tremendous efforts to invest in the provision of back-up agricultural infrastructures and inputs, honoring continental commitments (such as CAADP) and crafting other homegrown and other initiatives. Some challenges, however, do persist.

Tracking agricultural spending

In recognition of the critical and potentially transformative role that women play in agricultural growth in developing countries, Actionaid International has since 2012 been implementing a three-year Public Finance for Agriculture Project in Rwanda, Nigeria, Kenya and Uganda.
