Two pupils died on the spot while another breathed his last in hospital after they were knocked by a speeding vehicle in Ngororero District.

The deceased pupils were identified as Ibrahim Mutuyimana, 15, Obed Izabayo, 5, and one identified only as Rukundo, 6, who was pronounced dead on reaching hospital.

The pupils were on their way home from Mbonabyombi Primary School when a land cruiser registration number RAC 902 A hit them, according to Police.

The accident took place in Hindiro Sector on the Mukamira–Ngororero–Muhanga road at about 12 pm.

One other pupil identified as Mathieu Hatangimana, 8, was injured.

He was rushed to Kabaya Hospital in the same district for first aid before being transferred to Central University Teaching Hospital of Kigali (Chuk) for treatment.

Police attributed the accident to reckless driving.

"The information we have so far is that the driver got distracted and knocked the pupils. But investigation is still underway to ascertain the real cause of the accident,” Superintendent Emmanuel Hitayezu, Spokesperson of Police in Western Province told The New Times.

Hitayezu appealed to drivers to reduce their speed whenever they reach areas where students cross the road.

The Vice Mayor in charge of social affairs in Ngororero District, Clothilde Nyiraneza said all the pupils hailed from Gatare Cell. She added that the body of the child who died at Chuk had been returned to Ngororero home for burial last evening.

The accident happened a day after five people perished in motor accident on the Kigali-Huye highway on Sunday.
