It was a disappointing day for Lion de Fer as they were outplayed by league leaders Remera Buffaloes in a national rugby league game played at UTEXRWA ground on Saturday.

The Buffaloes scored an unanswered six tries to stay top of the league table and set themselves up for the semi-final play-offs. Jean d’Amour Ishimwe managed to kick three penalties for the Lions.

The game started with neither side getting closer to the try area. Lions scored the first points when Ishimwe scored a penalty, but it didn’t take long before Luciene Bikamba equalized with a penalty from the middle of the pitch.

Buffaloes captain Vincent Kamali scored the first try of the game with a superb solo run through a loose Lions defence.

Scrumhalf Patrick Ikoraukwishaka later gathered a blind pass from Leonard Twizeye to stretch the lead for the Buffaloes. Forward Benjamin Makombe later picked up from a scrum and touched down in the corner.

Lions surged forward and after some carries and a maul they were awarded a penalty which Ishimwe converted just before half time.

The Lions came back from the break with determination and drive but were unable to carry the ball across the try line despite camping at the Buffaloes try area a couple of times.

Makombe and Ikoraukwishaka grabbed a second try each before Buffaloes back Hassan Moize stretched the lead after picking up an offload.

The Lions piled pressure towards the end of the game but Aime Ndaherwa and captain Olivier Nukwigize were denied by the Buffalo defence. Buffaloes would have scored more points but kicker Bikamba was having a poor day.
