Edmond Joie Igabe scored 12 points to help University of Rwanda-College of Arts and Social Sciences claim their first win of the season with 49-47 victory over Rusizi in the national basketball league on Saturday in Huye.

Jean de Dieu Bakundukize of Rusizi basketball club, though, scored the game high 14 points but with little support from teammates, his effort was not enough to rescue the South-Western-based side front defeat inside the UR- Huye Campus gymnasium.

Speaking to Times Sport in a post-game interview, UR- CASS coach Charles Mushumba admitted the toughness of the challenge his team were faced with, but also promised fast recovery from the misery they are enduring since start of the season last month.

"We are happy we didn’t disappoint our fans, we owe this victory to our supporters today. We have not been performing well lately but I can see something good is happening, I believe in the next few weeks we will be performing differently,” Mushumba said.

Elsewhere, reigning champions Espoir bounced from last weekend’s defeat to IPRC-Kigali to beat struggling 30-Plus 52-42 at Cercle Sportif de Kigali courts.

In other games, on-form APR won 67-23 against University of Rwanda College of Education while newcomers Patriots defeated IPRC-Kigali 71-53.

In women’s league, defending champions Ubumwe inked their maiden win of the season with a 52-36 success over UR- CASS following defeat to newcomers The Hoops Rwanda in the opening game two weeks ago.

Meanwhile, all Sunday’s fixtures were cancelled following a fatal car accident that involved Kigali Basketball Club team while on their way to Huye for a game against University of Rwanda-College of Arts and Social Sciences.
