Police in Gisagara District have arrested a man allegedly killing his sister.

Emmanuel Nzikoruriho, a resident of Gishubi Sector in Gisagara District, is suspected to have killed Florence Uwihoreye, 33, last weekend.

The suspect allegedly killed his sister over a wrangle that Police say stemmed from Rwf10,000, a monthly stipend from Vision Umurenge Programme (VUP) towards the vulnerable.

The victim was a beneficiary of VUP.

"His sister asked him to give her the money but he refused,” Simon Peter Mukama, the Regional Police Commander for Southern Province, said.

He said the suspect was arrested following a tip-off by residents and his wife.

Police recovered a coat and a blood-stained machete from their house.

Nzikoruriho was arrested while taking part in burial ceremonies and was transferred to Huye Police Station.

Police said the suspect’s wife said that on the fateful day, her husband returned home at about 1am and started washing the coat, which made her suspicious.

Speaking from Police, Nzikoruriho admitted to the crime, claiming he was not in his senses when he killed the sister.

The victim, who was categorised among vulnerable, is survived by a 10-month-old baby, now under the care of a godmother.

Police said Uwihoreye developed speech disability at the age of 12 and that the suspect normally received the VUP support on her behalf.

Nzikoruriho acknowledged that last December, he received the VUP Rwf10,000 on behalf of his sister.

However, he claimed that he acted unconsciously and has a history of mental disorder. The New Times could not independently verify the claims.
