Charlotte Rulinda, also known as Charly, is a musician with the girl band Nina and Charly. During their energetic performances around Kigali and upcountry, Nina and Charly are known for their unique dressing. Society Magazine’s Doreen Umutesi caught up with Charly to find out the origin of their classy outfits.

How can you describe your sense of style?

Charlotte Rulinda aka Charly

My sense of style is trendy. I believe that casual smart is what describes me best.

Do you have a personal designer for on and off stage?

I don’t have one. I’m comfortable with selecting my own outfit if I have to perform. I may need one in future though.

What would you prefer, a personally tailored outfit or an already made one?

This is a tricky question because I think both would work for me. However if I’m forced to choose, my preference would be a personally tailored outfit because it will describe me in detail.

What do you consider when shopping for clothes?

Comfort always comes first, but I always look for something decent that flatters my body. Colour is also important as it compliments my complexion.

What is the most expensive fashion accessory that you own?

It is a pair of Christian Louboutin boots. I recently developed an addiction for shoes and bags. I believe they complement one’s outfit.

What is your favourite scent?

My all-time favourite scent is Lancome’s Hypnose.

What is your favourite clothing item on a guy?

His watch, shoes and belt would get my attention. These three items say a lot about a guy’s personality. They demonstrate his sense of style and are a great indicator of how well organised he is.

Any fashion advice?

Don’t let the constant changes in the fashion world control you. As long as you’re comfortable, the rest will take care of itself.
