About 800 alumni of FAWE (The Forum for African Women Educationists) schools have formed an association to advocate for the girl child rights, especially in education.

The launch of the association held in Kigali, brought together old students of Gisozi and Gahini campuses.

"The girl child needs everyone’s protection, care and support to be able to develop and realise their full potential, said Charity Mutesi, an old student of the Gisozi campus.

FAWE Rwanda was created in 1997 with the purpose of leveling the gender landscape and improving attitudes towards girls’ education.

It currently supports about 1,500 students; targeting mainly bright but financially challenged girls.

"The alumni also made commitment to raise fees for at least one needy student every year,” said Telesphore Kabera, the in charge of policy, research and advocacy.

Martha Muhwezi, senior programme coordinator, expressed optimism that the association would play the motivation and mentorship role for other voiceless young women.
