NYAMASHEKE  —  The Canadian Agency for International Development (CAID) in partnership with the Canadian Embassy in Rwanda has constructed a child care centre in Ruharambuga, Nyamasheke district.

The over eight-roomed block worth over Frw15m was inaugurated on Wednesday, September 10 by officials of CAID.

Speaking at the inauguration ceremony, Robert Karemera from CAID said that centre was built to cater for children whose mothers work in tea plantations in Ruharambuga sector and the surrounding areas.

"The Canadian Embassy decided to build this child care centre specifically to improve the living conditions of children whose parents especially mothers work in tea plantations in Ruharambuga because these women get little time to attend to their children during working hours,” Karemera said.  

Zakaria Twagirayezu, the Sector Executive Secretary thanked the Canadian Embassy for the construction, saying the facility would cater for all children not in Ruharambuga alone but in the whole district.

Twagirayezu observed that the centre would enable the mothers dedicate more time to work in order to increase on their output.

Claudine Nyiramirimo, a mother who is among the beneficiaries said, "I am very happy to have got a place where we can leave our children during working hours. We have been moving up and down with them and this has been a big problem to us.”

Currently the centre has over 35 children aged between 2-5 years.  Parents who attended the function appealed to the Canadian Embassy to construct more child care centres in both Rusizi and Nyamasheke district.
