Driver in Rwigara tragic accident turns self to Police

Local businessman Assinapol Rwigara died in an accident in Kagugu Cell, Kinyinya Sector, Gasabo on Wednesday night.

Rwigara, who was driving a Mercedes Benz sedan, registration number RAC 391E, rammed into a Mercedes Benz truck, registration number RAC 806B.

Police last evening said the driver who had ran away after the accident, turned himself in at Gasabo District headquarters, in Kacyiru.

However, Police spokesperson Celestin Twahirwa, said they could not release the driver’s identity "for safety reasons.”

Traffic and Road Safety Department Spokesperson CIP Emmanuel Kabanda, said the businessman, who owned a tobacco manufacturing firm, died on the spot.

"The accident happened on the road from K-Club toward Utexirwa. The truck was coming from the K-Club direction while the deceased was driving from Utexirwa toward K-Club,” Kabanda narrated.

Eyewitnesses called the police after the accident but the truck driver had fled the scene by the time police arrived.

Rwigara, who owned, Premier Tobacco Company, was the first Rwandan to deal in tobacco business on a large scale. He was also into real estate business. He is survived by a wife and children.
