Rayon Sports have reacted to the team’s struggles in the National Football League by sacking head coach Andy Mfutila after less than three months in charge. Assistant coach Sosthene Habimana will take over with immediate effect.

The DR Congo-born tactician, signed a six-month contract with Rayon Sports in mid November, but failed to win a game in all the ten matches he was in charge—drawing six and losing four. Mfutila leaves the Nyanza-based side in fifth place with 22 points, 10 behind table leaders APR.

Former APR and TP Mazembe coach, Mfutila was tasked to guide Rayon Sports the league title, Cecafa Kagame Cup and possibly make improvement on the team’s performance in the CAF Confederation Cup.

In the past 12 months, Rayon were handled by four coaches—Didier Gomez da Rosa (French), Luc Eymael and Jean Francois Losciuto (both Belgian) as well as Mfutila.

According to Rayon Sports spokesperson, Aime Emmanuel Niyomusabye, Habimana will be in charge of the team as interim coach until further notice. Habinmana will be assisted by Thierry Hitimana, who is also the team manager.

Interim coach, Habimana, who was also in charge before Mfutila came in, will make his ‘second debut’ against bottom side, Isonga FC this afternoon in Muhanga.

"It’s true that Mfutila is no longer our coach, we had a long discussion and we agreed that it was in the best interest of both parties that we part ways, it was a mutual agreement and we wish him well in his next challenge,”

This season, 2013 league winners, Rayon Sports, started the season as APR’s main challengers but have only won five league matches (which all came before Mfutile took over) out of 14—drawing seven and losing two.

Since Mfutila’s arrival in November, Rayon has played ten matches in all competitions, drew six and lost four.

In Mfutila’s debut game, Rayon Sports came from behind twice to hold SC Kiyovu on 2-all draw while his last came on Sunday when Rayon lost 4-3 on penalty shoot-outs following a regular time 1-all draw against AS Kigali in the four-team Prudence tournament, which was won by APR on Sunday.

Police finished second and AS Kigali took third place.
